The good stuff

That lock screen customization is actually useful. I added a custom clock with a shadow effect that makes it pop without being distracting. And the ability to use emoji as wallpapers? Weirdly satisfying. I made a birthday card out of animated hearts and set it as my home screen. No one will ever know, but it’s there. Also, the volume slider now shows a percentage-finally. I used to guess how loud something was when adjusting music, and now I don’t have to. Small win, big relief.

And the battery swipe? Yeah, you can now see how much juice you’ve got just by swiping down from the top. Not a game-changer, but it’s faster than tapping into settings every time. The new split between ring and call volume is also a breath of fresh air. I never liked having both mixed together-now I can mute ringtones while keeping calls loud enough to hear through the door.

The not-so-good

It’s not all sunshine. Some of the UI tweaks feel… unnecessary. That misty animation when pausing a video? Cute at first, then kind of annoying after the fifth time. Feels like it’s slowing things down instead of adding flair. And the font changes are subtle, but they make text look a bit off on some apps-especially older ones. Didn’t notice it at first, but then I realized my notes app looked like it was reading in a different language.

Also, if you’re not on a Pixel or a high-end device, you might not get all the features. I saw a friend with a mid-tier Samsung try to set a cinematic wallpaper, and it just froze. Not great. So if you’re on an older or budget phone, expect some rough edges.

Bottom line

If you’re using a supported device and want a smoother, more polished Android experience, Android 14 for Android is worth the update. It’s not flashy, but it fixes real annoyances and gives you more control. If you're still on Android 13 and haven’t had any issues, you could probably wait-but not forever. Free update, solid improvements. Go ahead and grab it. You’ll be glad you did.
